Coast Silk Tassel--Garrya eliptica

Graceful chains of flowers hang gracefully from the branches of this bush and sway in the wind, looking like magnificent earrings. Even after the subtle green of the fresh flowers has faded to suble brown of dry flowers, they still adorn the bush with beauty. Native to the coast ranges, it likes sun near the coast and does not grow easily inland. Deer resistant. Can be drought tolerant, but looks much better with regular water. Evergreen from 5-30'. Picture was taken at the UC Botanical Garden.
