Cornus capitata--Evergreen Dogwood

Cornus capitata is now in full bloom at the UC Botanical Garden and is presenting a very lovely sight next to the lawn. With far more flowers than leaves showing, it is a vision in white. This species does well on the Pacfic Coast and has been here since the 1870's. Looks like the one in the Garden was planted about 100 years later, in 1974. The edible fruits, which are red, ripen in November. Usually grows 20-40' tall, but is taller in the wild. Seems like the perfect tree. Now I want to plant one!

This is one of my favorite trees, too.
