I always like to show the kids the bees in the poppies. The bright orange pollen in the pollen baskets in the hind legs is just so obvious, if they take a moment to look. They learn a little bit about plant/insect interaction and may go on to pay attention to all the interesting insects in the world. Or not. But at least I can tell myself that I did my bit for improving environmental education. The Green Camp at the UC Botanical Garden is starting soon; the camp counselors there will probably be doing a lot more environmental education than I do.
